“Only Fans” and a lesson in Scarcity…

Sometimes I make a post or a comment on Social Media and I have no idea how it’s going to go. Legit. Most of the time I’m just punking or attempting ta make someone laugh; but occasionally, I post something and it turns into a big discussion. Which is what has led me to writing this blog.

It was an advertisement requesting freelance writers to write articles for Teen magazine. I literally have no interest in writing articles for anything; so I decided instead to make a tongue in cheek comment on the thread, and then went about my regularly scheduled memeing.

My comment was, “Oh I’ll bite. How about a piece on the economic principle of Scarcity. How products and services that are abundant or in surplus creates a low value. Because people don’t see value in paying for things they can get easily. Which is why an Only Fans account isn’t a good idea”.

Now, obviously, with the word count allowed on Twitter, I really didn’t get to explain myself well; and also because of that word count, I didn’t want to. (I think it’s a pain in the ass to be forced to omit words simply to get a full thought to fit). So, for most of the comments that followed that post I simply ignored or dismissed them. However, after having seen the meme below, I realized I’m not the first one who has thought of the correlation between a social behavior and an economic principle.

Scarcity, is an economic principle that directly affects Supply and Demand. When a product or service is in limited supply or hard to acquire, the value increases, and the price typically goes up. Conversely, when a product or services is in surplus or easy to acquire, its value decreases, and the price typically goes down. Pretty basic concept, right? Diamonds are worth what they are worth because they are in high demand and they have an artificial Scarcity imposed on them, which allows a premium price to be charged to obtain them. Get it?

There are literally millions of products on the market today that are directly affected by Scarcity. In fact, some economists would make the argument that Scarcity has a more direct impact on the Market than inflation.

So, how does an economic principle apply to a website like Only Fans?

Well if you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m simply drawing a correlation of value based on a product that is being made readily available to a large audience; and it is a product. When a woman exposes herself on websites like Only Fans, etc. she IS the product. She’s reducing herself to that; by choice. Most of the time because they don’t realize the ramifications of such a choice. (Yes, I’m singling that gender out here. Because that seems to be the gender in the news that are opening Only Fans accounts in mass as of late)

The Real money is made when a manufacturer, wholesaler, distributer, etc. can get that product in front of the most people. Which is where the Only Fans platform comes in. They provide a means in which their content providers can provide content. Typically sexually explicit content.

Now, I personally don’t care how you feel about that. Whether it’s sexually explicit content, soft porn, hardcore porn, or any other type of human behavior that’s considered to be taboo. Seriously don’t care. My interest in this is simply pointing out the reduction in perceived social/moral value based on a basic economic principle. The exchange of a Social or Moral value for monetary value.

There’s a legitimate reason why people who work in the sex industry are looked at and viewed differently in society. And whether or not you’re a believer or a non-believer, it makes no difference, because you can blame God or millions of years of evolution, the result is the same: A naked body saved to be viewed by one, and only one person, has more social value than a body willingly allowed to be viewed by thousands.

So you’re welcome to argue it. You can disagree and attempt to defend it. But it doesn’t change millions of years of evolution and it certainly doesn’t change the mind of God on the subject. Get it?

I have literally lost count of the women that have asked me if starting an Only Fans account was a good idea; and my response is always the same: Don’t. Just don’t. It’s not worth it. YOU are worth more. Regardless of the amount of money you think you’ll earn from it…it will affect you in more ways than you realize; and if you got kids, it’ll affect them too. So…take a pass on it; walk away. Save those delicious goodies for your mate; and let the rest of the world continue to wonder.

You may not thank me for this now, but you’ll thank me later.

***No, I’m not getting into some lame porn debate. I’m very well aware, based on millions of years of evolution or the direct influence and intention of God, that men like to look at naked women and naked women like to be looked at. People like sex. People were literally designed for sex. That is a empirical truth that has been evident throughout history. I’m simply pointing to the clear economic implication of a social/moral behavior; and hoping others will recognize it too.

****I have actually overheard conversations stating that they would never date or be in a relationship with someone who has, or had been, on a Only Fans account. So, the social price of doing something like that IS high. It seems to fall into the same or similar category of someone who is promiscuous or has had numerous sexual partners? It’s not considered favorable in society. Perhaps due to an increased exposure to disease? Perhaps due to a societal morale conditioning? Either way…people don’t like it. Think less of it. So, by all means, blame God or evolution…but don’t whine to me about it. I’m simply pointing out the obvious.

*****Empowering women? Really? Why not just tell them to put a Scarlet Letter tattoo on their face? Nothing about reducing yourself to that of a product is “empowering”. Nothing. What it is is subjecting them and encouraging them to engage in an activity that ends in trauma; emotional, spiritual, and sometimes physical trauma. Why would you encourage anyone to do that?

******Understand this, I’m also not advocating or suggesting that anyone who has one of these accounts is a “bad” person or should be ridiculed or treated poorly for it. Absolutely not. That would be total bullshit. MOST, I’d wager, that have started accounts like this are utterly ignorant of the full ramifications. So, your condemnation isn’t warranted. What they need…is for someone to show them that they ARE worth more than money.

…and that’s what I think
