Many people have suffered under this covid news; not denying that. But as I listen to the news the stories that stand out to me are the ones of the small business owners who are struggling or who have lost their business due to this. Some of which have worked all of their lives to get to the level that they were at. And for the most part, people who read about their stories simply dismiss what they’re going thru. I actually overheard one lady who was talking to her friend say, “Well, if they can’t afford to pay their employees then they shouldn’t be in business”.
Hearing shit like that Scoobies me, ’cause I’ve actually been a small employer with the burden of meeting a payroll and I wonder if people like her realize that the small employers get demonized for laying people off too. People have this odd concept in their brains that if you are self employed suddenly, the moment you register the name of your business, you’re rich and simply screwing over the people who work for you to line your own pockets.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
It’s a thought process based in ignorance. Formulated and parroted by low level thinkers who haven’t got the slightest clue what it takes to start or run a business.
Self employed people aren’t working to pay rent. That’s a concept that is somewhat foreign to the vast majority of the population; because the vast majority of the globe is simply showing up to work so they can pay their bills and occasionally get a weekend off.
Nothing wrong with that, per se; I mean, if that’s what you want to do!
But for people who are self employed, the thought process and concept is quite different. They’re not showing up simply to pay their rent. They started their business and work hard at it daily, because they are looking for the balance of time and money.
Simply covering rent and paying all their bills isn’t enough for them. They want more. Not more in the money sense, more in the options/opportunity sense. That is concept that I have found alludes most people. And it would make sense that it would, right? ‘Cause the self employed population makes up a smaller percentage of the population than the masses who show up to clock in and clock out every day.
Now, I’m not saying that people who aren’t self employed haven’t got a valuable education or don’t work hard. Of course they do. But if you’re earning a paycheck, if you’re pullin a W2, if someone else is telling you when to show up, when to take your breaks, and when to pee…you’re not on the same level of thought process as your employer. Just aren’t.
The people in this country that are self employed are the life blood of this country. They are the very closest people who carry the feelings of Independence and tenacity of purpose mirrored in our Founders.
So…Don’t be working to pay rent and think you know better than your employer.
Don’t be working to pay rent and think your position is so valuable the business would be lost without you.
Don’t be working to pay rent and think for one minute, that you could do what your employer is doing. Because the only way you can do that is by, quitting your job and striking out on your own.
On your own…where no one is going to tell you when to show up. On your own, where you won’t always have the right equipment to do your job. On your own, where you may not always have enough to pay rent because you have a payroll to meet. On your own, where you get to pay your taxes and your employees taxes.
You are a tool and you haven’t the slightest clue what it takes to be self employed. Like a hammer, or screwdriver, or a wrench; you’ve been employed to show up and do a task. A job that your employer has commissioned you to do; nothing more. When a hammer doesn’t work for the task, a craftsman reaches for a different tool. Just like you, when you don’t work in the position you were hired to do, your employer hires a different tool.
But wait! You have a title and a good salary…which means you’re an expensive tool. Your job title and salary is impressive…to other tools.
Self employed people, have a self employed thought process. They aren’t working to simply pay rent. Which means, they’ll keep working and doing what they’re doing even when they can’t pay rent. Get it?
So you can laugh or criticize what they’re going thru in business and during this pandemic, but to people who know the truth of it, you look the fool.
We have lost more small businesses during this year then ever in our Nations history. Good people working hard to fulfill their dreams. People who stepped up, stepped out, took care of themselves, their own needs, and in the process managed to create businesses that have helped others have a place of employment to go to and fulfill theirs. This loss is an absolute travesty.
We need more people with the spine to be self employed, not less.
So consider this…’cause years from now when you’re staring down the barrel of your retirement, and your advisor is looking at your portfolio tellin you to consider starting a business to supplement your income to prevent living the rest of your days in poverty, you should listen.
