Why aren’t people taking the COVID pandemic seriously?

It’s a legitimate question, right? I mean, ten minutes on any social media platform and I guarantee you’ll read someones comment either stating that or asking that as a question. This is a global pandemic with over 13 million infected and over 550,000 dead. So what gives?

A few things actually…

At the start of this thing in January, when it first hit the news, I was tuned into the daily totals. In fact, a friend and I swapped numbers every day for nearly two months. I watched as the infection rate exploded. It was definitely concerning. I said, via online social media platforms, blogs, and in person discussions, “Wow, this thing is highly contagious”. Seems to be spreading really fast. But the death rate didn’t. I remember voicing my frustrations about it as I’d key in some numbers of various infection rates to the population and struggle with the reasoning behind the number I was given. “The death rate should be higher”, I’d say. Which would prompt a response of, “Isn’t that a good thing? You want people to die?”

No. Of course not. But even with the early on predictions and projections of this virus I was googling statistics and comparing death rates with other known contagions and ways we can all die. Given the early predictions…things weren’t adding up.

I mean, it looked like the makings of a viral Armageddon. Didn’t you kind of expect a pandemic Armageddon of sorts or was that just me? Ya know, like towns in shambles, mountains of dead bodies, struggling to find food and potable water, etc. Sure you can claim I watch too much television, but that stuff can happen. It’s not just a made up scenario in some made up movie; and a deadly virus sweeping the globe seems like the perfect storm to make something like that a reality.

But that’s not what has happened. Not even close. In fact, the 2.2 million dead in the U.S. that the White House prepared for, quietly went away with a whisper. The models got updated, the predictions changed, the science “evolved”. The focus turned to the testing and the infection rates. As more and more tests were conducted, the infection rates climbed. Turns out, people could carry the virus and not know they had it. Who knew?! So, what was once thought of as a death sentence became equated to the flu.

Is it the flu? Nope. But a virus you can catch, not have any symptoms, and not know you have doesn’t seem all that bad.

We live in a world where:

*Heart disease kills over 635,000 people a year in the US

*Cancer kills over 598,000 people a year in the US

*Car accidents kill over 161,000 people a year in the US

*Chronic lower respiratory diseases kill over 154,000 people a year in the US

*Strokes, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, Kidney disease, Influenza, Suicide, Blood poisoning, Diarrhea, Tuberculosis, etc. kill hundreds of thousands of people in the US, every year.

But wait….those aren’t all contagions or infectious diseases. Most of those can’t be transmitted through coughing, saliva, bodily fluids, etc. So then you can google those…and the list of infectious diseases is humbling. Rather than actually attempt to list them all, here is a link to the Top Ten Deadliest.

If you’re looking for ways and reasons to die google does not disappoint.

But wait! There’s more!

Early on in the pandemic the “experts” claimed we didn’t need masks. According to Snopes, “Fauci said: “Right now in the United States people should not be walking around with masks … You should think of healthcare providers who are needing them and the people who are ill.”” Why would he say that? Because at the time it wasn’t that we didn’t need to wear a mask, per se, he just feared a mask shortage; so he didn’t want the general public to make a run on masks and there not be enough for healthcare workers. So he lied about it? Snopes gives it a rating of “Outdated”. Meaning, ya he said it; but now he’s saying different. Which he is; now he’s a big advocate of masks. And not just the infamous N95 masks that everyone was saying was the only effective mask to wear, but any mask, made of anything. Suddenly we have house moms all over the country sewing together old socks to force their kids to wear, in an effort to “protect” them from the virus. You got people posting videos of how to make a mask out of a bra…(For realz. Click Here).

Along with dozens and dozens of videos, meme’s, and links to articles all touting the benefits and “science” of wearing a mask. But if you question it, if you pose the question, “Doesn’t the material the mask is made out of matter?”, “Isn’t practicing social distancing really what is offering the protection?”, “Some fabrics prevent less than 1% of the droplets in question; can you really claim that as being effective?” You’ll be met with people who are absolutely venomous in their response to you. They’ll claim they believe in the science, while advocating for more closures to “flatten the curve”, and then in the same breath cheer as the people masquerading as protesters march through our towns, no masks, no social distancing, and destroy our cities. In fact, there are even articles claiming that the protest didn’t lead to any new spikes in infections.

Is it still hard for you to wonder why people think this is a joke? Still struggling why people aren’t taking this pandemic seriously?

If so, I’m not sure how else to spell it out for you. Save one. Toilet paper. Earlier this year there was a run on toilet paper. The supply could not keep up with the demand. People were literally fighting over buying toilet paper because of the fear of shitting themselves and not having enough.

IF this pandemic turned out to be ANYTHING like they thought it would be, anything like the early projections showed, or what the “experts” anticipated….you wouldn’t have to be working so hard to convince anyone to wear a mask. You wouldn’t have to tell anyone to self isolate. They would be fighting over who got to wear a mask. They would be locked up in their homes avoiding people voluntarily.

But they’re not. Because it isn’t.

Instead we have debate. We have arguing over face masks and trail closures. We have people who are being hyper vigilant and those that could care less. And when you point out the stats, when you bring up the science…the actual science, and faced with the facts, the people who are dogmatic about it will default into a cry of benevolence and well-being for their fellow man. In an effort to elevate themselves as a good person over those who won’t wear a mask. Only…they’re not good people. They’re frauds with low self esteems, using other people to make themselves feel better about themselves. My question for them, when it comes to their benevolence of wearing a mask is: Where were you, when people in the thousands died of the flu last year? Where was your mask when thousands contracted other infectious diseases? Why did it take something like COVID19 for you to realize your presence, your behavior, has an effect on other people? Where have you been? What kind of bubble you been living in.

You want people to take this pandemic seriously? You want people to wear a mask? You want people to self isolate?

You better stack up those bodies. Then you won’t need to sell anyone on it.
