How wonderful life is…

A few weeks ago I found myself alone and feeling like watching a movie. When I’m around other people I tend to watch what they like to watch. Me, I like to watch documentaries, biographies and thrillers. Thrillers I can sell to others, documentaries/biographies, not so much. But that night while browsing Amazon Prime I came across the biography, Rocketman. The story of the British musician, Elton John.

I’ve heard a few of his songs over the years. Never been my favorite artist, but he’s had some catchy hits. Didn’t really know much about him, so I thought I’d check it out. Truthfully, the film went about how I expected it to go. The awkward, misunderstood, outcast musician, hard home life, gets a shot at fame, drug use, promiscuity, etc. Then he struggles, comes to terms with things, and is now doing great. The rest is history. Predictable. And as “hard” as they portray it in the movies, their life from my perspective, just doesn’t seem that hard. But then I guess, we all have our demons now don’t we?

But this song. This one song they played in the movie. For whatever reason, has just been stuck in my head. It’s been weeks now. Over and over, I find myself humming it. I’ve downloaded it to my collection. Been listening to it, over and over. And it’s not like I haven’t heard it before, ya know? It’s an old song. I’ve heard it many times in the past. But this song, Your Song, has just hit me so different. Maybe seeing how it was written? The drama surrounding it? I don’t know.

I pull the lyrics on it and this part: “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world”…Wow.

Think about that. Have you thought about that? How the people in your life actually enhance your life? Make your life better? By just being there. Just being present. Can you imagine anyone saying that to you? That YOU, just being there, being a part of their life makes their life better?

What a beautiful thing to say to someone. What a beautiful thing to know.

We’re so conditioned to perform. “Prove” our worth through work, status, education, our bank account, etc. How simplistic to know or feel valued by simply being appreciated by someone. Simply making life more tolerable for someone because you’re there. I don’t think we always recognize the impact people have on our lives. Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference. Add just that little bit that makes things better. Maybe for a moment or a day. Just that small glimmer of sunshine in the darkness that brings a smile to the face. Lightens the burden for a moment.

So he’s a musician, right? And he writes this song, Your Song…what a perfect name for a song to give someone. What a way to open yourself, spill your guts, and be vulnerable…just for a moment, and tell someone how much they mean to you and the impact they’ve had on your life. That’s pretty amazing, I think.

I hope one day you hear those words, “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world”…I hope one day you have the nerve to say those words to someone.

What an amazing thing…

I hope you know and feel how wonderful life is with you in it.
