The need to avoid. Type nines are the softest of the nine types on the Enneagram. They are very easy to get along with and tend to be accepting of everyone. It’s for this reason they are referred to as the “peacemakers”. They like solace. They often seek it in every situation and seem to project it from themselves simply by their presence.
In spite of all the good the type nines bring to a group or situation, they aren’t without their drawbacks.
Type nines are very accepting.
Sometimes too accepting. Type nines can be a bit gullible. Often disregarding or not recognizing basic warning signs and finding themselves in situations with people that cause them anxiety or can be dangerous. Frequently too accepting of input or advice that is unchecked. Type nines have a strong desire to “keep the peace”; often not speaking up for themselves when they should. Type nines often feel like their voice doesn’t matter. So they’ll remain silent; when they should speak up. They’ll often agree with an point of view they don’t actually agree with.
“White lies” are very common with Type nines. The rationale being that in some cases being honest will cause conflict; so to avoid conflict, they’ll lie. Type nines will choose to avoid conflict at all cost. With a type nine, lying is ALWAYS a viable option. Whatever is necessary for them to avoid facing the consequences of whatever it is they’re facing.
The root sin of Type Nines is: Laziness.
Life takes work. Effort. Type nines are all for that up to a point; then they check out. That’s one of the reasons why they put little effort into choosing friends, working at relationships, and why lying becomes so easy for them to employ. To truly vet someone you meet requires effort and time. Establishing and maintaining a healthy relationship with someone requires effort and consistency. Truly being honest with yourself and others requires effort and a desire. Type nines are simply too lazy to put forth the effort. So they agree, accept, and lie. They give up. Take an seemingly “easier” route.
Type nines need to value and embrace how finite and precious life is and make a valid effort to “Seize the day”. They need to recognize that nothing worth having comes easy. Realize that God wants peace too; but not at the price of dishonesty, gullibility, or slothfulness. God wants you to tend to what He’s trusted you, so that it isn’t overcome and ravaged by the weeds of life.
