Type One: The Perfectionist.

There is no such thing as a gray area to a type one. It’ll be right or it won’t be done at all. At least, that’s how type ones feel. You see, for a type one, anything less than the “right way” isn’t a way at all. It’s got to be right. And for a type one, it’s their mission to correct all the disorder in the world. So they work at it. Every day.

Type ones grew up feeling a strong sense of rules and order. They often saw what it was like to break the rules and have consequences. So, for them, breaking rules is simply unacceptable. They often are found to be model children. Grade “A” students. Type ones have a strong sense of justice and order. The guilty should pay and there is no room for error.

Of course, there is some advantages to this. If what you need is accuracy, type ones are the ones for the job. But they can often find themselves in small company of people who share their enthusiasm for hammering out every detail. Which means they often become overbearing and hard to be around.

For a type one, their root sin is: Anger. They’re angry at the imperfection of everything. They have a hard time understanding or accepting that we live in an imperfect world. Most importantly, they harbor a resentment towards God that He doesn’t “correct” it. To them, it’s quite the character flaw of God to allow so much imperfection and disorder to happen; so they attempt to take it upon themselves to do “God’s work”. By doing so, the world is a better place. One of order and purpose.

Type ones need to relax. They need to submit to the full will of God and not lean so much on their own understanding of things. They need to come to terms with the fact that God is in control and He has a plan and a purpose for everything. Even the perceived “disorder” of things. Not all things have to be “fixed” or “repaired”. Some things are exactly how they should be. And that can be hard for a type one to accept. Type ones need to submit to the idea that some things take time and are a process. That God IS working for the good of all people; and in that good, loves them where they’re at. Type ones need to adopt the Spirit of God, in that. Allow people to grow at their own pace; and accept things “in progress”.

Only then will a type one find true peace and release themselves from the bondage of perfection they live in. A self-imposed prison that inevitably leads to failure. A failure of the Spirit. One that is constantly striving with life.

Type Ones need to trust their Maker and learn to be adaptive and at peace with disorder. Understanding that God has a purpose and a plan for all things and they should find peace in that. Type ones worship the god of perfection. Type ones need to learn to trust God when it comes to the imperfections of life.

A good thing for a type one to do is: Give themselves a break. As much as they strive for perfection in the world around them, type ones do not allow themselves any room for error. So their self talk resembles something of a bludgeoning. Recognizing the deficiencies in their own character, type ones will mentally abuse themselves mercilessly, constantly subscribing to the belief that they “could have done better”. As a result, their internal anger builds and they simply express it throughout their day with whatever task they can lay their hands on.

Type ones would do good to remember they are fearfully and wonderfully made by their creator and the only way to the perfection they seek is through Him.

Some good study scriptures for type ones include: Proverbs 3:5-6, Romans 8:28, Hebrews 11:6, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, Exodus 20:1-26, Matthew 4:7, Psalms 139:14.
